How to use Moxibustion to turn a breech baby?

Moxibustion is a treatment that involves burning a moxa stick that is made with a plant named mugwort. Master Ruth will apply the moxa stick to the acupuncture point UB67, which is located on the outer edge of the little toe.

The moxa stick is held about an inch above the UB67 point, creating a mild heat sensation. This is typically done for 10-20 minutes per session.

You are recommended to do it once or twice daily for 1-2 weeks, starting around week 30-34 of pregnancy.

How does it work?

In traditional Chinese medicine, the UB67 point is believed to have a direct connection to the uterus and fetal position. Stimulating this point the heat from the moxa stick may increase fetal movement and trigger a reflex that encourages the baby to turn to head-first position.

Moreover, mugwort is a herbal plant that is commonly used in Chinese medicine for aiding fertility and pregnancy. It can increase blood flow and circulation to the placenta and improve the tone and contractility of the uterine muscles which create more favourable conditions for the baby to move into an optimal position.

The efficacy of moxibustion for turning breech babies has been studied, with some research indicating may be effective in up to 70% of cases. However, results can vary. Moxibustion is generally considered safe, but it's important to work with a qualified practitioner

What you might feel during moxibustion?

1. Warmth: The primary sensation you will feel is warmth at the site where the moxa is burned, usually near the acupuncture points on your little toes (Bladder 67 or UB67 points). The warmth can be soothing and comforting.

2. Relaxation: The heat and the process itself might make you feel relaxed, similar to how you might feel during other heat therapies.

3. Movement: Some may feel the baby move more during or after the treatment, as the baby potentially responds to the increased activity and warmth.

4. Emotional Response: You might experience various emotions ranging from hopefulness and calmness to anxiety or impatience, depending on your expectations and feelings about the procedure and your pregnancy.

How to do moxibustion at home?

  1. To do moxibustion of UB 67 at home, the pregnant woman should sit in a comfortable, reclined position.

  2. Your partner/helper/care giver should begin by lighting a moxa stick. You could purchase the moxa from your acupuncturist or local herbal pharmacy. To light the stick, it’s best to use a candle or a cigar lighter because it may take a while for it to be lit up. Once lit and with a red ember tip, hold the lit end over UB 67 about 1-2 inches away from the skin, close enough to feel pleasantly warm, but not enough to feel uncomfortable or burn the skin.

  3. Moxibustion should be applied for 4 times a day with each time 5-10 minutes for 10-14 consecutive days.

  4. It is not uncommon for women to experience increased fetal movement once the moxa is applied and for the hours following.

  5. Ultrasounds are used to check the baby's position after the course of treatments.

  6. Treatment should stop as soon as your baby has turned.
